A public engagement drop-in session will take place next week to allow residents and businesses to learn more about plans for an active travel route, ahead of the first phase.

The scheme evolved following several consultation exercises that resulted in residents, schools and businesses identifying Lea Green to Whiston Hospital as a route for active travel investment through the adopted Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, providing valuable feedback on preliminary designs in shaping the final scheme.

The first phase will provide users with a continuous, coherent, attractive and safe environment and it would encourage people to undertake more journeys by walking, wheeling, and cycling between St John Vianney Catholic Primary School to Sherdley Road.

With works expected to start in the coming months, an information drop-in event has been arranged to take place at the school where residents can ask any questions they may have and learn more about the wider project.

Councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron MBE, Deputy Leader of St Helens Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said:

“Data shows that two thirds of all journeys taken in the Liverpool City Region are less than three miles, with around half still taken by car. With this in mind, we’re making a conscious effort to make greener travel the go-to choice for residents and visitors to our borough for shorter trips by creating safe and accessible cycling and walking routes to key locations, like employment sites and schools – as is the case with this one.

“Like any development, it is important that the residents are kept updated on matters happening in their area which is why we are putting on this drop in event at St John Vianney Catholic Primary School. It is great to have support from the school with the scheme, which will help alleviate congestion during peak school times and allow pupils to cycle, walk and wheel to school with their parents or carers in a safe manner.”

The information drop-in event will be held at St John Vianney Catholic Primary School, Elton Head Road, St Helens, WA0 5BT between 3pm-7pm on Thursday 18th July.
